Trip to Matakohe Museum




As part of the Year 7 & 8 EnviroSchools programme "Our Big Blue Backyard" we visited Matakohe Museum.
This trip was focused around the general history of the Kaipara area.
The staff at the Matakohe Museum were fabulous as they guided our students around the museum, sharing their historical knowledge and passion for the Kaipara.
One group had the pleasure of a former student from Ruawai College, Luke Sheppard as their tour guide.
Matakohe Museum has free entry for residents that live from Tokatoka to Maungaturoto.

Science Focus

We have been looking at the tide in Science and learning about how the tide is formed and the different tides there are.  Both year 7 & 8 have learn't about the phases of the moon and how these have an impact on the tides.  We have learnt why and how we have low and high tides and how sometimes during the month we have different tides like Spring and Neap tides.  We then looked at King tides and how the orbits of the earth and moon have to be at their Perigee and Perihelion in order for a king tide to occur. Did you know that only New Zealand, Australia and some island's in the Pacific call it a King Tide other countries call it a perigean tide.

Welcome to our Enviro Schools Blog

At the beginning of the year we were asked to create an enviro school program for the year 7 and 8 Students.  We chose the topic of Our Big Blue Backyard and have focussed our teaching and learning around the Kaipara Harbour.  This blog has been set up so that the students and teachers can share their findings and show what it is we are looking at in Ruawai College Year 7 and 8 Enviro Program.
